<title>&quot;Loving Lampposts&quot; - A film by Todd Drezner</title>
<author>cevans@autismhangout.com</author>
<link>http://www.autismhangout.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=366</link>
<description>&quot;Loving Lampposts&quot; - A wide angle view of autism.

Filmmaker Todd Drezner set out to better understand the world of autism as seen through the eyes of his son, Sam. What he found was a world filled with wonder and beauty.

As with the spectrum it represents, autism is a topic of extremes. The &quot;cure&quot; versus &quot;accept&quot; debate is one example of how people can polarize. Todd Drezner's moving film opens the door to more valid discussions around the acceptance of autism as a gift.

Meet Dr. Rhoda Bernard, Director - Boston Conservatory Program for Students on the Autism Spectrum. Under her direction, the Boston Conservatory is boldly filling a great need:

* It has created a place for those talented musicians on the spectrum to develop their gifts.

* It has developed an exclusive curriculum for tomorrow's teachers, offering the &quot;best of the best&quot; an opportunity to learn &quot;first-hand,&quot; how best to develop the skills of those with autism.

It thrills me that competent, motivated, inspired people like Dr. Bernard can bring venerable institutions like the Boston Conservatory to assist our special kids in the development of their gifts.

<description>&quot;Walking in the Dark: Finding the Light in Autism&quot; - A film by Brian Dery

As a young man, about to embark on a career in filmmaking, Brian Dery contracted Guillain Barre syndrome and found himself paralyzed from the neck down. Although medical science gave up on him, he and his family persevered. Today he's a successful filmmaker, fully exploiting his skills although his legs still require braces. But his personal story of &quot;not letting the human body beat the human spirit&quot; became his calling. He started seeking out and documenting other stories of inspiration and motivation.

His latest film - &quot;Walking in the Dark: Finding the Light in Autism&quot; - is one such film about successfully dealing with the challenges of autism.

<author>cevans@autismhangout.com</author>
<link>http://www.autismhangout.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=336</link>
<description>Aspiring writer Jeffery Kellen went looking for a safe place for people on the autism spectrum to post and display their creative work. He found none. So he created one on Facebook.

&quot;Artists and Autism is solely dedicated to promoting autism awareness through the arts. Submissions may come from anyone on the spectrum or from their neurotypical family members and friends. The purpose of the site is also to uplift, encourage and inspire all of those around us by our God-given talents and to nurture those abilities to their fullest extent.&quot; The Artists and Autism Mission statement.

This is a wonderful venture! Thanks, Jeffery!

Dr. Bogdashina believes there is much to learn from and about people on the spectrum. Listen as she call for scientists worldwide to explore their insightful - and often unexplainable - perceptive and sensory abilities.

<title>Help from Prevagen</title>
<author>cevans@autismhangout.com</author>
<link>http://www.autismhangout.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=330</link>
<description>I am new to this site but I thought that other parents may be interested in looking into a product that has demonstrated some improvement with our daughter.
Nicole is our youngest daughter, she turns 11 in May of 2010. Nicole was born with an undiagnosed learning disability - Doctors have considered 'mild autism', and some tendencies of Asperger's syndrome and most agree that she has ADD. Nicole has had the same special Ed teachers since 1st grade
(2005 - 2006) and in 2nd grade (Dec 2006) she started on a transdermal patch for ADD. The teachers reported some improvement, mostly with mood
- still problems with focus and social skills. Sometime in 2008 we discovered that some parents of Autistic and ADD kids, were seeing some improvement in their child's development by supplementing with Prevagen.
In October of 2008 we decided to add Prevagen to Nicole's vitamin set (1 multi vitamin and 1 omega 3) in the morning. After about 3 weeks, one of Nicole's teachers asked my wife if we had changed Nicole's medication (or did we put her on something new) because they had all noticed a marked improvement in her behavior - the teachers had noticed much greater focus, Nicole was now proactive in her routine - she did not need the kind of regular prompting that they were used to giving her.
The teachers agreed that she was having a 'break through' year. We also noticed improvement at home. Nicole continues to take Prevagen and she continues to improve at school - and we believe that there is a direct link. If you are interested in looking into this, go to prevagen.com. <description>

The passing of the real &quot;Rain man,&quot; Mr. Kim Peek is indeed cause for reflection. The man recalled over 98% of the content of 9,000+ books! What a wonderful example of the potential for Mother Nature's extremes.

Autism can be seen as Mother Nature's ongoing attempt to improve our species. Environment is clearly one of the triggers for her experimentation. And our special kids are evidence that she's at work. As parents of kids with autism, we're the first line of science. We need to pay close attention to - and learn from - the results of her efforts. Mr. Peek is one incredible example of what we may find!

In treating autism, there are a few proven therapies, although that list is growing. Partially because of that, the interest in alternative therapies has never been higher. Indeed, folks are taking their special kids to experience surfing in California, horses in Mongolia and dolphins in Key Largo, Florida. Today we're going to learn of the latter.

<title>Announcing! Autism Hangout &quot;Education Section&quot;</title>
<author>cevans@autismhangout.com</author>
<link>http://www.autismhangout.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=269</link>
<description>Yes indeed! Coming soon, there will be a catalog of Autism Hangout prepared and autism expert contributed programming!

Here is the text from my announcement:

1. I&#8217;m building out a new section at Autism Hangout to help decrease the amount of time it takes for current thought on how to thrive with autism information to reach the general autism population&#8230; those of us that need tips, wisdom and insights NOW to help us best live with the condition. I&#8217;m calling it the Education section. It will consist of Autism Hangout prepared and autism expert contributed materials. Some examples can include: conference presentations, articles, tips for better living and more.

2. The AH Education Section will be a catalog of web-delivered materials assembled by AH and autism experts. Who is an autism expert? Anyone with wisdom, knowledge, tips or insights to share that will allow us all to thrive with autism. That includes, parents, teachers and professionals as well as authors, researchers and conference speakers.

3. Online programs can be as simple as a video of a presentation (4-10 minutes in length), it can be a powerpoint or it can be a combination of the above. Leave-behinds such as tip sheets or work sheets are encouraged. After watching one of these programs, a viewer should be able to immediately act on the knowledge delivered. Viewers will also have the opportunity to rate the value of the program. This will keep the best shows out there for all to experience. And don&#8217;t worry, the Autism Hangout tools will be simple enough that anyone can assemble an online program.

4. There will be a fee charged for viewing the programs&#8230; the bulk of it will go to the content provider. But that&#8217;s only fair to those that take the time to post and share their knowledge. Know, though, that the prices will be low and reasonable to encourage everyone to learn and benefit from these programs.

5. So, what kind of content qualifies for a program? Here&#8217;s a starter list:
* Teachers, if you have some great tips for in-classroom education, by all means, share them!
* Parents and caregivers, if you discover a great insight for transitions or IEPS or diet or some other daily challenge, put it out there for others to benefit.
* Autism conference speakers, if you&#8217;ve got some wisdom or encouragement, here&#8217;s the place to put it to reach the other 98% of the autism community that CAN&#8217;T come to see and hear you in person.
* And you authors, researchers and other autism experts? You&#8217;ve got an eager audience of assimilators here, just waiting to learn new ways to thrive with autism. So what are YOU waiting for?

6. There&#8217;s lots of work to do yet for this to happen&#8230; but some really smart people are on it and I know the autism community is behind it. But what I&#8217;m most excited to see is just how much we all can learn and share with each other to help us all thrive with autism.

Thank you for being a part of Autism Hangout.

If you've got a child on the spectrum, you pretty quickly figure out that YOUR positive attitude is one of your best strengths. Life with autism can be challenging. But if you look deeper, you can find reasons and moments to be grateful. Indeed, an &quot;attitude of gratitude&quot; will open the door to your being able to &quot;thrive with autism.&quot;

<title>&quot;Better Living Through Autism&quot; - Craig Evans</title>
<author>cevans@autismhangout.com</author>
<link>http://www.autismhangout.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=236</link>
<description>You know, it occurred to me the other day... in living the best life we can for our special kids (free of the bad stuff like chemicals, additives, unnecessary ingredients), we're really being FORCED to behave in the manner of a responsible citizen if of the planet earth. That's NOT a bad thing! In fact, we can show that it's really NOT that hard to do, either... and make the world a better place in the process.

I may be returning to my hippie roots, here. But with a 30 year career in business under my belt, I'm corporate and capitalist smart... and I KNOW where we spend our dollars DOES make a difference. We CAN change the world for the better. And we start with our purchases. So here's a plan: &quot;Better Living Through Autism.&quot; Pass it on.

<description>

Autism Hangout is a year old on Independence Day, 2009. Thank you for making our first year a success! You have clearly shown us your interest in news that promotes how to thrive with the daily challenges of autism.

Announcing: Autism Hangout Webinars!

In our second year, beginning in the fall, Autism Hangout will launch an ongoing series of interactive Webinars. What is a Webinar? Think of it as a live, scheduled TV show on the web where the hosts (that would be me and several other Autism Hangout reporters) interview autism experts LIVE. But we also ask YOUR questions. As you're watching, you can email us your thoughts. We'll be reading this collective feedback and ask the prominent questions you pose.

Autism Hangout Webinars are designed to bring you current thought... to help us all thrive with autism. Our guest experts appear at the most important autism conferences around the globe.

For subject matter, we'll be using the Autism Crossroads feature at Autism Hangout. Autism Crossroads is a map by age that covers some of the biggest decisions a family of a child with autism will face... from diagnosis through therapies and treatments to IEPS and education, social issues, guardianship, independent living, careers even relationships.

Each Webinar will be archived at Autism Hangout for repeat viewing. And each will be UPDATED on a regular basis.

Autism Hangout Webinars are designed to bring you current thought... to help us all thrive with autism.

Hear Craig talk about Webinars, here:

Autism Hangout's newest reporter, L. Mae Wilkinson runs her own website (www.autismisnottheboss.com). In this Special Report, Mae cites a recent study that shows there is as much as a four year gap between when children are actually diagnosed with autism vs. when it is possible for them to be diagnosed.

Part of the solution is to make sure that parents trust their instincts and follow up on any concerns about their child's development.

<description>Meet Jeff Schneider and Greg Tonn, two innovative marketers with a big idea.

It's a fact, few people with kids on the spectrum can afford the time and expense of attending a conference on autism. So these fellows teamed up with Autism Today magazine and formed (the) Autism At Home Series; a subscription-based service that brings the news equivalent of a multi-day conference on autism to a subscriber's home, once a month.
