<description>&quot;Keeping people with Asperger's OUT of the legal system&quot; - Meet testing advocate, Claudia Curry

As we all know, life on the autism spectrum comes with challenges... some more difficult than others. Complicating the situation is the always bad choice of &quot;self medication&quot; using drugs or alcohol. If you know someone like that -- or that has been you, and you're caught up in ongoing trouble with the law and or jail, there's good news on the horizon. And today's guest is here to tell us about is. Autism Hangout, please welcome someone who has been there and done that with family, author Claudia Curry.

<description>&quot;Asperger's Syndrome. When Life Hands You Lemons, Make Lemonade.&quot; Meet author Anita Lesko.

We all know about the unprecedented rise in autism diagnosis among younger people, but what if at the age of 30, 40 or even 50 you just learned you had Aspergers? Sure it helps explain a few things... but how would you react?

Most folks in this situation have found the knowledge not only helpful, but inspiring. Today's guest is a perfect example. Upon learning of her autism at the age of 50, this double-degreed professional turned writer to document her learnings for the Neurotypical world and, equally as important, fellow Aspies of all ages.

Autism Hangout, please welcome today's guest, author Anita Lesko.

<description>Smells to bring calm! Meet the developer of MyScentBox, Jennifer Vought

It's not uncommon for some of our special kids to have trouble controlling their emotions... especially if they're stressed. There's a common axiom that states: Music calms the savage beast. Music appeals to our sense of hearing. And indeed, it has been shown to work. Today's guest is exploring another sense -- the sense of smell. And she's found smells can also be used to help provide calm. Autism Hangout, please welcome today's guest, the developer of My Scent Box, Jennifer Vought.

His book - &quot;Social Enjoyment Groups for Children, Teens and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders&quot; (Jessica Kingsley Publisher) starts with a candid discussion of 10 &quot;hurdles&quot; commonly faced by people on the spectrum and then lays out a fun, enjoyable way to channel these challenges into assets.

The man-made epidemic of autism is here... and it's going to get worse unless changes are made.

In this seminal book Dan Olmstead and Mark Blaxill document how medical interests and corporate greed have promoted profits above the protection of people. We can't trust capitalism... or the government. As autism advocates, we need to be the change we want to see in the world.

&quot;I&#8217;m inviting small businesses &#8211; mostly families that originally assembled a product or service to meet THEIR loved one&#8217;s need &#8211; to come and tell us about their solutions. These are NOT big brands. These are NOT products you&#8217;re likely to find in your own neighborhood. But you will find them in online communities that share your special interest&#8230; or need&#8230; like Autism Hangout.&quot;

&quot;I&#8217;m THRILLED to be able to invite people building quality autism products and services to our community table. In fact, I&#8217;m pulling out the chair for them. I hope you stop by, check out their offerings and extend the same welcome&#8230; maybe even sample of couple of their products.&quot;

<title>&quot;Loving Lampposts&quot; - A film by Todd Drezner</title>

<description>&quot;Loving Lampposts&quot; - A wide angle view of autism.

Filmmaker Todd Drezner set out to better understand the world of autism as seen through the eyes of his son, Sam. What he found was a world filled with wonder and beauty.

As with the spectrum it represents, autism is a topic of extremes. The &quot;cure&quot; versus &quot;accept&quot; debate is one example of how people can polarize. Todd Drezner's moving film opens the door to more valid discussions around the acceptance of autism as a gift.

Meet Dr. Rhoda Bernard, Director - Boston Conservatory Program for Students on the Autism Spectrum. Under her direction, the Boston Conservatory is boldly filling a great need:

* It has created a place for those talented musicians on the spectrum to develop their gifts.

* It has developed an exclusive curriculum for tomorrow's teachers, offering the &quot;best of the best&quot; an opportunity to learn &quot;first-hand,&quot; how best to develop the skills of those with autism.

It thrills me that competent, motivated, inspired people like Dr. Bernard can bring venerable institutions like the Boston Conservatory to assist our special kids in the development of their gifts.

<description>&quot;Walking in the Dark: Finding the Light in Autism&quot; - A film by Brian Dery

As a young man, about to embark on a career in filmmaking, Brian Dery contracted Guillain Barre syndrome and found himself paralyzed from the neck down. Although medical science gave up on him, he and his family persevered. Today he's a successful filmmaker, fully exploiting his skills although his legs still require braces. But his personal story of &quot;not letting the human body beat the human spirit&quot; became his calling. He started seeking out and documenting other stories of inspiration and motivation.

His latest film - &quot;Walking in the Dark: Finding the Light in Autism&quot; - is one such film about successfully dealing with the challenges of autism.

<description>Aspiring writer Jeffery Kellen went looking for a safe place for people on the autism spectrum to post and display their creative work. He found none. So he created one on Facebook.

&quot;Artists and Autism is solely dedicated to promoting autism awareness through the arts. Submissions may come from anyone on the spectrum or from their neurotypical family members and friends. The purpose of the site is also to uplift, encourage and inspire all of those around us by our God-given talents and to nurture those abilities to their fullest extent.&quot; The Artists and Autism Mission statement.

<title>Help from Prevagen</title>
<author>cevans@autismhangout.com</author>
<link>http://www.autismhangout.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=330</link>
<description>I am new to this site but I thought that other parents may be interested in looking into a product that has demonstrated some improvement with our daughter.
Nicole is our youngest daughter, she turns 11 in May of 2010. Nicole was born with an undiagnosed learning disability - Doctors have considered 'mild autism', and some tendencies of Asperger's syndrome and most agree that she has ADD. Nicole has had the same special Ed teachers since 1st grade
(2005 - 2006) and in 2nd grade (Dec 2006) she started on a transdermal patch for ADD. The teachers reported some improvement, mostly with mood
- still problems with focus and social skills. Sometime in 2008 we discovered that some parents of Autistic and ADD kids, were seeing some improvement in their child's development by supplementing with Prevagen.
In October of 2008 we decided to add Prevagen to Nicole's vitamin set (1 multi vitamin and 1 omega 3) in the morning. After about 3 weeks, one of Nicole's teachers asked my wife if we had changed Nicole's medication (or did we put her on something new) because they had all noticed a marked improvement in her behavior - the teachers had noticed much greater focus, Nicole was now proactive in her routine - she did not need the kind of regular prompting that they were used to giving her.
The teachers agreed that she was having a 'break through' year. We also noticed improvement at home. Nicole continues to take Prevagen and she continues to improve at school - and we believe that there is a direct link. If you are interested in looking into this, go to prevagen.com. What a wonderfully sensitive and competent generation the world has to look forward to!

<title>Mother Nature and the Beautiful Mind of Kim Peek</title>
<author>cevans@autismhangout.com</author>
<link>http://www.autismhangout.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=292</link>
<description>

The passing of the real &quot;Rain man,&quot; Mr. Kim Peek is indeed cause for reflection. The man recalled over 98% of the content of 9,000+ books! What a wonderful example of the potential for Mother Nature's extremes.

Autism can be seen as Mother Nature's ongoing attempt to improve our species. Environment is clearly one of the triggers for her experimentation. And our special kids are evidence that she's at work. As parents of kids with autism, we're the first line of science. We need to pay close attention to - and learn from - the results of her efforts. Mr. Peek is one incredible example of what we may find!

In treating autism, there are a few proven therapies, although that list is growing. Partially because of that, the interest in alternative therapies has never been higher. Indeed, folks are taking their special kids to experience surfing in California, horses in Mongolia and dolphins in Key Largo, Florida. Today we're going to learn of the latter.
