Mind Blindness

I shared this poem with my poetry group. Many people with Asperger's Syndrome struggle with Mind Blindness. I tried to explain this to my poetry group. None of them are on the autism spectrum but all of them could relate to this poem. They've been in situations where they've this same fear.

 

Mind Blindness

We sit in an awkward silence.

I wish I knew what you were

feeling. I don't want to act on

a false pretense. I want to show

you my affection, but I don't know

what you're thinking.

 

Could you be wondering what I

want from you? Do you feel anything

for me? I don't want to scare you.

Clarity is what I need. I try to understand.

Your expressions and body language are

hard to read.

 

I want to kiss you. I want to give you

my love. I'm afraid to reach for you.

I don't dare make a move. I don't want

to force myself on you.
