Tuesday, February 15, 2011 @9:31:51 AM

A new online continuing education course, Autism Spectrum Disorders in Schools: Evidence-Based Screening and Assessment is available from Professional Development Resources. The objective of this course is to summarize the empirically-based screening and assessment methodology in ASD and to describe a comprehensive developmental approach for assessing students with ASD. The course was developed to help psychologists, occupational therapists, counselors, therapists, social workers, teachers, and parents:

  • Recognize the characteristics of the most prevalent types of ASD
  • Distinguish between DSM diagnosis and IDEA classification
  • Learn the differences between a dimensional and categorical approach to ASD
  • Differentiate among screening, assessment, and diagnosis
  • Follow a multi-step assessment strategy to screen students with ASD
  • Identify the components of a comprehensive developmental assessment
  • Select evidence-based assessment tools
  • Analyze coexisting conditions commonly found in students with ASD
