A new online continuing education course, Autism Spectrum Disorders in Schools: Evidence-Based Screening and Assessment is available from Professional Development Resources. The objective of this course is to summarize the empirically-based screening and assessment methodology in ASD and to describe a comprehensive developmental approach for assessing students with ASD. The course was developed to help psychologists, occupational therapists, counselors, therapists, social workers, teachers, and parents:
- Recognize the characteristics of the most prevalent types of ASD
- Distinguish between DSM diagnosis and IDEA classification
- Learn the differences between a dimensional and categorical approach to ASD
- Differentiate among screening, assessment, and diagnosis
- Follow a multi-step assessment strategy to screen students with ASD
- Identify the components of a comprehensive developmental assessment
- Select evidence-based assessment tools
- Analyze coexisting conditions commonly found in students with ASD
