Where we find peace; what really works with autism :-)

By: Richard Maguire Friday, March 09, 2012 @2:49:29 PM

I have be reading and researching various areas of autism this evening. It is fascinating to get more insights into our world and see the commonality of issues and insights we have. I have also been looking at autism services with particular reference to their understanding of the culture and inner life of autism. This is important as so many...

My Watch

By: Richard Maguire Friday, March 09, 2012 @12:11:04 PM

The watch i am wearing in my profile picture has been a stim object and was at the time the picture was taken. I ceased using it as a stim object when it's face picked up a few scratches and did not offer the tactile and visual comfort I wanted. I still have the watch and it is on my desk nexxt to the computer monitor.

Who Am I?

By: Nutcracker Friday, March 09, 2012 @10:50:41 AM

This body takes some getting used to. Without looking in the mirror, I have difficulty identifying myself. I don't know how to think out of the box because I don't see a box. I don't have inbuilt knowledge of prejudice and don't know why people do these things to hurt others. I never really quite know what I am and...

Stimming in Peace

By: Richard Maguire Thursday, March 08, 2012 @12:26:54 PM

Throughout my life I have needed objects to bond with, get sensory comfort from and enjoy holding. The term for objects we autistic people use like this is "stim objects" and their use is called stimming. We do this for lots of reasons. It is comforting, we feel happy when we stim and very importantly we are able to concentrate and...

Feel the Focus

By: Richard Maguire Wednesday, February 15, 2012 @3:12:19 PM

I was on an autism training job for Autism Oxford today. To get there I had to drive, catch a bus then walk though a crowded city centre. The bus and city centre part of the journey was frought with sensory and interaction frights. They were horrible and took most of what I had to get through. I made it with a classic autistic coping...
