Summer vacation and children with an ASD

By: steveasd09 Saturday, August 22, 2009 @10:32:12 AM

Life is tough for parents during these summer days with the kids out of school. Arranging for child care while trying to work is a common issue, as is trying to find things for the kids to do day after day on a tight budget. My son has ASD and is non-verbal and likes to do something every second of the day, much of it related to...

Autism Puberty Choices... You can either Laugh or Cry

By: TannersDad Saturday, August 22, 2009 @5:11:39 AM

I used to tell my employees you have two choices. You can either laugh or you can cry. Nothing around here is worth crying about so find a way to laugh at the situation. This is not a funny topic folks people are chemically castrating young men and have urged me to do so... Check out this article.... http://tinyurl.com/nm6qas   We all...

RE: A toy for Tech-Minded Autism/Asperger's 10 year-olds & up

By: tommy_w8576 Tuesday, August 18, 2009 @3:35:57 PM

Been tinkering with the largest version of Radio Shack's "Electronics Learning Experiment Snap-Together Kits", the #303 version, for ~$90.00. It would interest 10 year-old Autism/Asperger's boys (or girls), who like to "tinker" with "gadgets". The electronics parts are clearly labled, & mounted on plastic...

Visiting a store recently...lower functioning autism

By: steveasd09 Tuesday, August 18, 2009 @5:51:14 AM

My son is non-verbal and "stims" on a few favorite items at home when he gets overloaded with too much input from the stressful world. One of his favorites is a shoe or two. He loves the laces and sometimes is happy putting them in the holes, tapping them on the shoe, etc...so...    I had to get to the store to...

Hot Weather :-(

By: tommy_w8576 Monday, August 17, 2009 @2:13:46 PM

Been too hot to do much @ home. Did go swimming in our backyard swimming pool yesterday & today. Had to go to a GI doctor appointment. Will have a colonoscopy proceedure, to have a look up my rear-end on the 4th next month. :-( Anyway, once one is older than Age 50, it "has to be done", to check for & catch any colon cancer...

Inappropriate play or fabulous imagination?

By: steveasd09 Saturday, August 15, 2009 @11:18:50 AM

Watching a child with autism at play is an education in creativity at times. Because my son is non-verbal, he lags behind in social skills, overall common sense and understanding of how things are supposed to be and why. Maybe this explains the higher level of imagination and ability to make believe that can be seen in his playtime...

The importance of fun!

By: cevans Friday, August 14, 2009 @1:39:59 PM

I have a great life... for which I am deeply grateful.  But I also take the time to reflect on just how good the world really is.    Last weekend, DeAnne and I went to a bluegrass festival in N. MN.  We've done this for years.  It's our chance to get back to nature, play/listen to some fabulous music, and commune with...

Autism - Transition from bath to showers

By: steveasd09 Friday, August 14, 2009 @11:58:50 AM

It all starts out after we bring a new baby home from the hospital. That first bath, the photos, the excitement and joy of the parents...and the screams of the child. Many times these are simply due to being frightened from a new experience, if they continue to end in this way, your child might not like the water.  After several months,...
