Standards of happiness

Sunday, January 11, 2009 @11:40:08 AM

Thomas Jefferson, (Whom some feel was an Aspie) included the pursuit of happiness in the constitution of these United States of America. There was a popular book and movie that was release last year that was titled The Pursuit of Happyness, (notice the Aspie spelling). There has always been something woven in the fabric of America that includes the pursuit of happiness. However the standard of happiness has always been from a Neuro-typical perspecitive.

I do not know exactly what it means for an NT to be happy as this has never been defined. But I was thinking the other day-uh oh! I wondered what happiness would appear to us Aspies. It began to occur to me that standards of happiness would look differently to us on the ASD. More importantly I believe being the entire concept of being happy is thought by folk in general to outside our experience.

Yeah i know about the commonality of feelings of anxiety and depression. We feel so blue about being misunderstood and not left alone we do not consider being happy on this "wrong planet" of ours.

I feel not only is it healthy for us to consider being happy, I think it is an essential part of our ASD lives that we consider being happy. We too deserve to be happy. I feel it important that we know that we can be happy and Aspie and these things are not mutually exclusive. We on the spectrum need to give ourselves permission to be happy in any environment that we find ourselves in. We deserve this and we have a right to be happy.

But just what would this ASD standard of happiness look like anyway? This was the question I posed to my fellow group members last Thursday. I had interesting responces and we discussed this some but did not walk away with a consensus-not yet. I was hoping more of you in the ASD adult community would have participated in my Neurodiversity group. Perhaps next time.

I shared what I believe our standard to be. And now I will share it with you.:

BEING ENGAGED IN A ROUTINE THAT IS PRODUCTIVE AND PRODUCES IDEAS/PRODUCTS THAT WILL ENHANCE THE LIVES OF OTHER LIVES, AND ENHANCES OURS AS WELL.

Let me know what you think.

Cool question (and blog), Paul. I'm also looking forward to what you learn.

I'm only concerned with making myself happy. Although, it does feel good to make other people happy as well I'm mainly concerned finding my own happiness. All I know is that I'm happy when I'm listening to my favorite band, seeing a concert, talking to my brother, working out or just doing something that relaxes me and takes my mind off something that is bothering me. Oh yeah, and I'm happy in my routines. Jenny
