Amazing Futures, Amazing Now

Saturday, February 21, 2009 @8:09:56 AM

I read Tanner's Dad's blog and thought about things that are amazing for us even today.  We are in the process of planning the future with our daughter  who has Asperger Syndrome.  She has huge sensory issues and extreme anxiety.  While she is quite high functioning, she has barriers to a normal future, and we are looking to redefine normal.

I want to tell anyone who reads this to listen to the podcast by Richard Solomon, on the Feature Programs link here at AutismHangout.  At a time when our daughter, at 14, was being thrown out of transition programs and not accepted into other programs, and being sent home from the psychologist for bad behavior (baited and taunted by the psychologist) we went back to see Dr. Solomon, who originally diagnosed her ASD.

Dr. Solomon sees huge potential in our daughter.  Sometimes his care for her can help us be more hopeful through tough times.  He talks to her in a very human way, and understands her needs.  At the same time, he has won a place in her heart, and given him a family-member honor....a name from the TV show Stargate Atlantis.  He is Dr. Zelenka to Anna.  We are not in the PLAY project, just seeing him in his office.  He is one of the few professionals that my husband takes time from work to go see with us, because his advice to us is that valuable.

I am planning to write in the near future about how we are working out Anna's transition planning.  We want to share our amazing future, too.  Lydia/lassie

Lydia. Don't bother with redefining "normal." Even existing definitions won't cut it for our kids. How about expanding on definitions of "unique, creative, difficult, rewarding, stressful" and "love." In those areas, you and Anna excel.

Dr. Solomon and Tanner's Dad are both right... there is amazing potential and adventure to be had with our kids. Embrace it with a great attitude EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Thanks for your comment on my blog. If I had to say one think about the IEP process is think about one subject that is kind of out of the box and your daughter will enjoy. Joyce M
