Real work for real kids!

Thursday, August 18, 2011 @6:46:53 AM

Many many exciting things have been happening, but they are time-consuming.  I am developing a new part of my life within the disability community.  I have been taking classes intensively for one year, and have one more year toward a PhD.  I would like to teach and research the ways that kids transition successfully from Special Ed through Rehab services to wonderful self-determining adult lives.  This is a long journey for teens, and my studies are a long journey for someone who is already 52!!

The Asperger Teen Girls and A Few Friends group meets tonight.  Our non-profit, Eden Transition Alliance supports this group's existence.  We have excitement about a new thing, too.  A local antique "mall" has invited our kids to work there on a volunteer basis.  This will help us make more contacts in our community and to get some funding to do the things we want to do for and with kids with disabilities.

We know that kids who are in academic courses in high school, including many Aspies, do not get a lot of life skills or employability skills training.  Our non-profit exists to try to meet that need for kids who want to learn skills as they launch to adulthood.  Kids who are ready to work full time can go through Rehab Services, but for kids just starting out, we think our individualized approach will meet some real needs.

How could I help but be incrediby excited about real kids learning real job skills and becoming real workers?   Lydia
