Taking Part in the Autistic Way

Thursday, May 24, 2012 @2:58:52 AM

Being autistic we don't find joining in close proximity to other people easy so we join in at a safe distance. In this video I was enjoying myself as much as anyone else. However I did the classic autistic thing. I enjoyed at a safe distance and I videoed the fun. Autistic people often need a filter and a point of access to fun and other people. Here I was using my camera as the filter and focus point. Te process of doing a video also allows me to be non verbal and it helps other people to see what I am doing and not interact verbally with me. Being automatic this is much more comfortable than being expected to field verbal comments, deal with the resulting shock and overload and desperately try to find a verbal response and work up a facial expression to go with it.

In a lot of social situations you will see a lot of autistic people doing specific things so they can interact and not have to field too much unexpected verbal and social input.

Please enjoy my video and enjoy my autistic way of taking part.
