Let's hear it for other Autistics invalidating our own experience......

Tuesday, August 14, 2012 @9:57:26 PM

I got home from a 14 hour shift as an election judge and found out I was UNINVITED to speak at an Autism conference, because the single, career minded inviter ASSUMED I practiced law full time and apparently, thinks that building a photography business, parenting 5 autistic kids, and having worked in other fields full time in the past are not valid pursuits. My son's needs have precluded my ability to maintain any full time employment as the supports are not there for families with multi-issue kids.

I never told her I practiced full time.....I do not identify as a lawyer but as an artist, though I maintain my license and CLEs...and in fact was not going to speak about law or the practice of law.  I have become very tired of people who have no lives of their own outside work or telling others they should live for work or solitariness  invalidating the life experiences of those of us who fight to make relationships work, take alternate paths and do not follow the accepted model for Autistics of being single, with no kids and only a standard "career" chasing the almighty buck.

I have the same problem with these folks as I have with many mainstream socalled feminists - who assume that we want to abort if we get pregnant, that kids are primarily an inconvenience and that we should run our lives based on the same dysfunctional models as Male Captains of Industry.  I am wondering is=f she is now uninviting another speaker I reconmmended, because that person is a full time SAHM or if her having practiced law full time in earlier years somehow makes her more valid as a role model for young spectrum inhabitants.

Jane. If you're willing, I'd be delighted to COPY this blog entry and EMAIL it to the appropriate person.

I'd also be delighted to add my comments about how discrimination and prejudice hurt everyone. Craig
