An Autistic & His "Toy Guns"
Thursday, August 09, 2012 @9:45:34 AM
A very "hot button issue" in the Autism community seems to be the issue of whether or not us Autistics should be allowed to "play" with "Toy Guns". I myself have a pretty good "Arsenal" of "Toy Guns" in my posession, both made by Hasbro, Inc. & BuzzBee Toys, Ltd. I like going out in the backyard and "shooting them off", foam "pretend" bullets flying. But a lot of parents of Autistic children & Autistic adults pretty-much "repress" any "interest" the Autistic child or adult has in wanting to have and play with "Toy Guns". The fear is rooted I think in my own opinion to the fact we here in America are a "trigger-happy" society, where there are a lot of shootings and homicides committed with "100% Real Guns". Parents of Autistics worry that "Toy Guns" teach "violence". I do have a different view on that. I myself grew up decades ago as a kid, watching TV westerns, cop shows, and shows like "The Rat Patrol" and "COMBAT!". Mommy and Daddy dressed me in a "cowboy" outfit, which I loved to wear and I had a pair of "Toy Guns" to go with the outfit. I played cowboysw and indians in the yard with my little brother and with other kids in the trailer park in Derry, before we moved to Salem here in New Hampshire. I sure as Hell did not turn into an "evil" nasty teenager or adult because of being allowed to play with "Toy Guns". I think an issue here, is "messing" around with trying to repress the natural male hominid primate "socialization process" of learning to master and control "aggression". All-out "repression" of male hominid primate aggression in childhood, with no "play outlet" to "channel and learn "self-mastery" of innate male hominid primate territorial aggression can and probably does "mess up" the male hominid primate mind. Of course, there are those "male hominid primates" who are just plain "cuckoo in the head" probably with schizophrenia, like the guy who shot up that movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado. Plus of course that Neo-Nazi who sht up that Sikh Temple in Wisconsin this past Sunday. I will admit, that there is a "big difference" between "fantasy" and "real" violence.

There is a young adult man (with autism) here in MN who is fascinated with REAL guns. But he never shoots them... just collects. The community has raised eyebrows over his collection. I'm proud of his behavior in regard to this scrutiny. |
