The Simple Joy of Talking

Thursday, April 05, 2012 @12:41:11 PM

I had a lovely conversation with someone today. Being autistic I do not usually get the opportunity to converse with people. This is usually because me and other people are inside, lighting is low and the air is stale. All these things cause me to have to go into survival mode and deal with the unpleasant sensory environment. Also indoors people are uncomfortably close, their noise is too much and they move around too much for me to get a cognitive handle on them. I just have to drop out and abandon hope of getting to know people and conversing with them.

Today I sat on a bench by St Ives harbour next to a lady who was eating a pasty like I was. We sat and ate for a while then got talking. We spent over two hours talking about our families life and all sorts of things, We laughed together and had a super time. I felt free to talk outside in the clear air. I felt like other people do, enjoying human company and not just hanging on in the spaces like I normally have to do feeling tense, overloaded and on the outside.

This afternoon was the best fun I have had in ages, talking, laughing and enjoying good company. Too often I am on my own overloaded and not knowing what to do. I fell so happy today.

The lady i spoke to is called Joan, newly widowed and having some time away with her daughter. Joan is a charming lady so full of love and life I hope lots more people can meet Joan.I had a lovely conversation with someone today. Wow that's great! I have had similar rare but wonderful experiences of feeling relaxed enough to have an actual conversation with someone else. I am so glad you were able to talk to this lady, as having successful interactions with others always leaves me feeling refreshed and ready for life.

You reminded me how difficult it is for people with strong sensory issues to survive in a typical environment. I'm glad you were able to escape and enjoy the day as much as you did!

It's fantastic Richard that you were able to have meaningful conversation with this lady and i am glad you were able to do just that while thoroughly enjoying yourself all the while in a relaxed atmosphere. One thing i have noticed is how much more conversation is possible with my own children in a relaxed state!!
