I have a twenty year old Autistic son that never wants to stop eating. We eat whole foods and I try not to give him allot of complex carbohydrates. When he wants more and I say NO. He will sometimes hit his head hard and bit on things. I am concerned about his health.
He was once on a gluten free diet. We eat only minimally processed, organic poultry and wild fish. We eat fruit, vegetables nuts and seeds. We never eat any foods with unnatural chemicals. I buy organic cookies, chips and other snacks. Nothing with an unnatural chemical contact.
What can I do to help him eat less? He has one more year in a wonderful school. I am so very fearful about his future.

Hi Signs. This is Craig Evans. I'm sorry about your son's issue. Just out of curiosity, is he on Abilify? My stepson had HUGE eating issues while on that drug. He ballooned to 250+ pounds. Once removed, he's once again down to under 200.

Hi Signs.

It's pretty well documented that Abilify can cause weight gain... more so in some than others. If you Google Abilify for side effects or weight gain, you'll find the research. Here's one article on a study:

My stepson put on 50# over 2-3 years. Since going off Abilify, his normal appetite has returned and he's down to his more-normal weight.

Hello again Craig and Cevans:
I am praying one of you knows of another medication that would help control my sons moods. He has been on Abilfy since seventeen. He is twenty. Until seventeen he took nothing.
His Psychiatrist is more concerned with pushing medication than helping him. We live in Staten Island, New York . I wish I could find a better Psychiatrist.
I do not know what to do.
I am still learning how to navigate on here. I made a blog comment and also answered here.
Thank you both for your response.
